Informed Consent

Before agreeing to participate in this research study, it is important that you read and understand the following explanation of its purpose as well as the inherent benefits and risks of the study and how it will be conducted.

Title of Study: Rewarding Risk: Determining Undergraduate Design Students’ Attitudes on Risk-taking in their Design Coursework

Principal Investigator: Dennis Cheatham, Assistant Professor of Design, Miami University Department of Art.

Purpose of the Study: You are being asked to participate in a research study to determine Miami University undergraduate graphic design students’ attitudes on risk-taking in design coursework. This information is being gathered in order to inform the development of learning experiences that can encourage students to grow their design knowledge through exploration when approaching projects, assignments, and other design challenges.

Study Procedures: You will be asked to participate in a survey that consists of nine questions which will take no more than five minutes of your time. Your participation is voluntary and you may decline to answer any questions for any reason. Your decision whether to participate or to withdraw from the study will have no detrimental effect on your grade or standing in the graphic design program.

Foreseeable Risks: No foreseeable risks to your physical or psychological well-being are involved in this study. You will not be asked to do anything that exposes you to risks beyond those of everyday life.

Benefits to the Subjects and/or Others: The data gathered from this survey will inform the development of innovation-focused learning experiences. These learning experiences will hope to grow students’ tendencies for attempting inventive design outcomes. This curricular development will benefit current and future graphic design students at Miami University and possibly students in other design programs.

Compensation for Participants: No compensation will be offered for participation in this study.

Information Gathered: The survey will not ask for personal information but should you inadvertently provide this information it will be omitted from any presentations or publications. Data will not be presented in a way that individuals could be identified.

Procedures for Securing Research Information: The transmission of survey data is protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. The survey software will communicate with your computer and record data that could identify the computer through the IP address; however, the IP address will not be reported to the researcher. Your personal information will be stored on one Miami University-owned laptop whose contents are encrypted and access protected by password.
