Generative AI technologies, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the Perplexity search tool, and Midjourney image generation, shape how people learn and work. As partners in creating a useful, usable, and desirable world, designers use generative AI to amplify their skills and expand their creative potential. These technologies hold massive potential for empowering designers in every practice.

However, as with any technology, there are many unknowns. Generative AI technologies are trained on datasets that often go unsourced. Copyright and ownership concerns are still being worked out. AI tools have changed teaching and learning—for the better and for worse. But I do not see this as a moment to buffer against these tools. Instead, it’s time to use these technologies so we may better understand these tools’ intended and unintended consequences by testing, exploring, and critically examining the results.

Below are resources from my Generative AI coursework, leadership, and work with students at Miami University.
